The European Space Agency released its latest observations and analysis of near-Earth asteroid 2024 YR4 on June 27th local time, confirming that the probability of the celestial body colliding with the moon in December 2032 is about 4%, but it does not pose a threat to Earth.
2024 YR4 is a small asteroid with a diameter of about 80 meters that was discovered at the end of 202. Early monitoring had raised concerns about a potential Earth impact due to data uncertainty. In February of this year, the European Space Agency had already ruled out the risk of it coll with Earth, and current observations show that the probability of it impacting Earth is almost zero.
According to the European Space Agency’s Planetary Defense Office, if 224 YR4 collides with the moon, it could form a crater on the lunar surface with a diameter of about 1 kilometer and could send debris into the-Moon space, which could pose some risk to spacecraft and satellites in orbit.
The European Space Agency said that no intervention measures are needed at present and will continue to with international agencies to track changes in the orbit of the celestial body. The next key observation opportunity is expected in 2028. (Reporter Zhu Xues)
