According to a report by Reuters, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Lukasius posted on social platform X on the 27th local time Lithuania has officially notified UN Secretary-General Guterres that the country will withdraw from the Ottawa Mine Ban Convention.
The Ottawa Mine Ban Convention came into effect in 999. The Convention stipulates the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of anti-personnel mines. Although China has not joined the Ottawa Ban Convention, it appreciates the humanitarian spirit embodied in the Convention, and recognizes its purpose and objectives. China has participated in the annual meeting of the States parties to the Convention as an observer on many occasions, and in recent years has consistently voted in favor of the “Implementation of the Ottawa Mine Ban Convention” resolution in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly fully demonstrating China’s affirmation and importance of the Convention’s important role. China has already and will continue to actively participate in international mine action cooperation and assistance activities through various and feasible channels.
